Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Mu Enzhi et al. in 1983. The type section is at Magongtan, north of the Shuanghe Township, Changning County in southwestern Sichuan Province.

Synonym: (马公滩组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Lower and Middle parts of the formation, 206 m thick, are composed of interbeds of yellow green mudstone with silty mudstone; the sandy component increases gradually upwards and sandy mudstone with rich trace fossils is developed as well. The Upper part, 74 m thick, consists of blue gray, or brown yellow by weathering, medium- and thick-bedded quartzose sandstone with no fossils found yet.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Magongtan Fm rests conformably onto the underlying Lingxiqiao Fm

Upper contact

The Magongtan Fm rests conformably below the overlying Xiushan Fm

Regional extent

The Magongtan Fm is restricted in southwestern Sichuan Province in distribution.
